Alpine-Mediterranean spa town Merano and environs

Explore Merano from the mountains and in the valley

The spa town Merano lies at the entrance to the Passeiertal valley, Venosta valley, and Adige valleys. There is a remarkable contrast between the soaring snow-capped peaks in the background and the mild climate and Mediterranean gardens that characterise the town. It is precisely this interplay of opposite yet harmonious contrasts that gives Merano and its surroundings their unique charm. Its colourful variety is what makes it a perfect destination for a rich and diverse holiday experience – all year round.

The mild spring temperatures offer a compelling foretaste of summer. As winter takes its leave, it is gratifying to spot the first blossoms alongside one of Merano’s wide promenades and hiking trails. The blossoming apple trees that line the hiking and cycling paths in the area create a fabulous natural backdrop. Spring is also the time when the marvellous Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle reopen their gates once again, enchanting visitors with a unique and colourful spectacle. In summer as well as in autumn, the gardens are just the place for contemplating the beauty of nature across the seasons.

In summer, the area of Merano and environs is transformed into an authentic hiking paradise. Its many valleys offer a wealth of hiking paths at all difficulty levels. From leisurely hiking to the quaint mountain huts, to high mountain trails and challenging mountaineering excursions on the glacier, there is something to suit everyone. Cyclists are equally spoiled for choice: with countless cycling paths and MTB trails, there are numerous ways to explore the abundant beauty spots of the region. The Merano Thermal Baths, are well worth visiting, especially in the warm season when the sprawling green lawns provide a comfortable natural carpet on which to relax.

For many visitors, the best time to visit Merano is autumn. In South Tyrol, this is the time of the apple and grape harvests and is also the season of the traditional Törggelen – a special occasion to relish the seasonal delights of the local cuisine.

In wintertime, when the mountains are cloaked in white, Merano is transformed into a major winter sporting destination. After a day out on the snow in one of the numerous ski areas in the vicinity, the Therme Meran, Merano's Thermal Baths, are the perfect place to unwind and soothe sore muscles with a wide choice of spa and beauty treatments. In December, the Christmas Markets are an absolute must for anyone in search of the magical christmas atmosphere.

Besides its seasonal attractions, Merano and environs offer visitors a rich all-year cultural program, with events running from the Merano Spring to the Merano Grape Festival, and from the Merano Music Festival to the Merano WineFestival
