The spa town Merano lies at the entrance to the Passeiertal valley, Venosta valley, and Adige valleys. In summer, the area of Merano and environs is transformed into an authentic hiking paradise. Its many valleys offer a wealth of hiking paths at all difficulty levels. From leisurely hiking to the quaint mountain huts, to high mountain trails and challenging mountaineering excursions on the glacier, there is something to suit everyone. Cyclists are equally spoiled for choice: with countless cycling paths and MTB trails, there are numerous ways to explore the abundant beauty spots of the region. The Merano Thermal Baths, are well worth visiting, especially in the warm season when the sprawling green lawns provide a comfortable natural carpet on which to relax.
For many visitors, the best time to visit Merano is autumn. In South Tyrol, this is the time of the apple and grape harvests and is also the season of the traditional Törggelen – a special occasion to relish the seasonal delights of the local cuisine.
In wintertime, when the mountains are cloaked in white, Merano is transformed into a major winter sporting destination. After a day out on the snow in one of the numerous ski areas in the vicinity, the Therme Meran, Merano's Thermal Baths, are the perfect place to unwind and soothe sore muscles with a wide choice of spa and beauty treatments. In December, the Christmas Markets are an absolute must for anyone in search of the magical christmas atmosphere.
